When a garage door is a genuine emergency
A door stuck fully open is a security and heat-loss problem the same night it happens. A door stuck closed can trap a vehicle you need in the morning. A snapped spring or cable, a door hanging crooked in the tracks, or a bottom panel pulled loose are all situations where continuing to press the button makes the damage worse. Those are the calls to make immediately rather than waiting for the weekend.
Broken torsion springs
The loud bang from the garage, followed by a door that will not lift, is almost always a torsion spring. Springs are wound under extreme tension and matched to the exact weight of your door, so this is never a safe DIY repair. We replace them in matched pairs, re-balance the door by hand, and reset the opener force so the new springs are not fighting a mis-set motor.
Snapped cables and doors off track
When a lift cable lets go, one side of the door drops and the panel wedges in the track. Running the opener from there bends the track and can tear the hinges out of the panel. We take the tension off safely, inspect the drums, bearings and bottom brackets that usually took damage in the same event, and re-seat the door square before it moves again.
Doors that will not close at night
Sometimes the fix is small — a misaligned safety sensor, a bumped bracket, ice under the bottom seal, a limit setting that drifted. We check the cheap causes before recommending parts, because on a cold Northeast Ohio night the difference between a sensor realignment and a full repair matters.
Securing the door when a same-night repair is not possible
If a part has to be ordered, we do not simply leave. The door gets manually secured in the safest position, the opener is disconnected so nobody runs it by accident, and you know the plan and the price before we go.
Before you call — three quick things to check
- Look at the springs above the door. A visible gap in the coil means a broken spring — stop using the opener entirely.
- Check both safety sensors near the floor. A blinking or unlit LED, or a cobweb across the eye, will stop a door from closing.
- Make sure the red emergency release cord has not been pulled. A disengaged trolley makes the opener run while the door stays put.
