What is safe to check yourself

Wipe both photo eyes and confirm both indicator lights are steady, not blinking
Clear the floor along the full width of the opening, including ice and salt buildup
Check that nothing is leaning against a sensor bracket
Watch the door from a safe distance and note where it stops
Listen for a single loud bang earlier in the day, which usually means a spring broke

The door is very heavy to lift by hand or will not stay put halfway
You see a gap in a torsion spring above the door
The opener strains, hums or clicks without moving the door
