Seven things that decide the price
Which component failed
Springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks, bottom brackets and openers all sit at very different price points. The cheapest repairs are wear items like rollers and seals; the most involved are spring systems and opener replacements.
Door size and weight
A single-car uninsulated door and a wide insulated double door do not use the same springs, cables or drums. Heavier doors need higher-rated parts, and that shows up in the price.
One spring or two
Most doors run either a single torsion spring or a matched pair. When one spring in a pair fails, replacing both is standard practice — the second one has the same cycle count and usually fails shortly after.
Cycle life of the parts chosen
Springs are rated in cycles. A higher-cycle spring costs more up front and lasts substantially longer on a door that opens several times a day. On a low-use detached garage, a standard spring may be the sensible choice.
Condition of the surrounding hardware
A snapped cable often means the drum, bearing or bottom bracket also took damage. Replacing only the obvious part leaves the door out of balance and puts the new part under the same stress that broke the last one.
Opener age and type
Chain, belt and screw drive openers differ in parts availability. On an older unit, a control board or gear kit can approach the cost of a new opener, so we lay both options out rather than assuming.
Access and site conditions
Detached garages, low headroom, tight side room and doors frozen to an icy slab all add time to the job. Northeast Ohio winters make that last one more common than most people expect.
How to compare garage door quotes fairly
- Ask what cycle rating the springs are — a cheap quote often means a low-cycle spring.
- Ask whether both springs are being replaced, or only the broken one.
- Ask whether cables, drums and bearings were inspected, not just the failed part.
- Ask whether the door will be balance-tested and the opener force re-set afterward.
- Ask what is warrantied and for how long, in writing.
A safety note on springs
Torsion springs and lift cables hold enough stored energy to cause serious injury. There is no safe DIY version of that repair, and no cost saving worth attempting it. Leave high-tension components to a technician with the correct winding bars and training.
Garage door cost questions
- How much does garage door repair cost in Northeast Ohio?
- It depends on which parts are involved and the size and weight of the door. A single worn roller is a very different job from a pair of torsion springs on an insulated double door. Garage Door Medic inspects the whole system first and gives the price for each recommended part before any work starts.
- Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?
- Repair is usually the better value when the panels are straight and the door is structurally sound — springs, cables, rollers, hinges and openers are all serviceable parts. Replacement makes more sense when panels are cracked or rusted through, the door has been hit hard, or the same section keeps failing.
- Why do garage door springs cost more than other parts?
- Torsion springs are wound under extreme tension and are matched to the exact weight, height and cycle life of your door. The part itself is only half of it — winding, balancing and re-testing the door safely takes specialized tools and training, which is why this is never a DIY job.
- Do you charge for a diagnosis?
- Call 440-478-5350 and we will explain how the visit works before we schedule it. You will know what to expect before a technician is dispatched.
- Can you tell me a price over the phone?
- We can give you the range of possibilities for common repairs once we know the door type, the number of springs and what the door is doing. An exact figure comes after the door is inspected, because the visible symptom is often not the failed part.
